For my bachelor's thesis, I researched how Javanese-Surinamese Dutch people experience the lack of recognition of their history within the representation of the Dutch colonial past. Based on theoretical insights from Edward Saïd, Gloria Wekker, W.E.B. Du Bois and others, as well as nine in-depth interviews, I demonstrate how a selective culture of remembrance romanticises the colonial past while marginalising Javanese-Surinamese history.
The results show that this exclusion is still palpable in everyday life and influences how descendants of colonised people develop and find their place in society.
Thanks to my supervisors and participants, this research was awarded a grade of 8.5, which is a nice conclusion to my studies in Interdisciplinary Social Science. For those intrested in reading my thesis please contact me.
